A full and thorough dental examination is necessary every 6-12 months to screen our soft tissues and teeth for any pathology. Often this will include digital x-rays and possibly a scale and clean if required.
We only use digital x-rays in our practice. They are quick and easy and emit the lowest amount of radiation in a focussed dose to the area of interest. Whether it be a general area or specific tooth to allow screening and diagnosis.
At the time of your regular examination an assessment for your periodontal/gum health will be carried out. Some patients are more prone to and have a predisposition to periodontal disease. This is concerning as the inflammation this causes can lead to loss of support for your teeth if not treated. Hence this patient will likely be referred to see our Hygienist for assessment and treatment of gum disease. The hygienist also plays a big role in prevention of this inflammation by removing buildup before it causes permanent damage. She also helps you to maintain optimal overall oral health with education of the best oral hygiene practices for your mouth.
We place fillings in teeth to restore them into function and for form/appearance. Now 99% of our fillings are tooth coloured. Whether they are composite resin, glass ionomer or ceramic/porcelain. Our aim is to always retain as much tooth tissue as possible whilst providing the tooth with as much longevity and strength. Hence we will always guide you through the best filling options for each individual tooth.
We put a high emphasis at our practice on prevention of dental disease/issues. This involves regular visits to monitor your oral health in order to try and prevent tooth decay and to keep your gum and oral health at its optimum. There are also other preventative measures we use like FISSURE SEALANTS, which we can use to seal off young (childrens and teenagers) deep fissures in teeth, to help prevent cavities from developing. MOUTHGUARDS can also be custom made to fit your mouth for use in contact sport. It is so very important to have a mouthguard that fits well to your individual mouth and that hence stays in well, in order to help to prevent both dental and head traumas. The hygienist also plays a big role in prevention of this inflammation by removing buildup before it causes permanent damage. She also helps you to maintain optimal overall oral health with education of the best oral hygiene practices for your mouth.
Not everyone has all four wisdom teeth and not all wisdom teeth need to be removed. We will evaluate the condition and placement of your wisdom teeth and whether they will be ok to monitor, to be removed or to be left in place by weighing up the risks and benefits with you. Some wisdom teeth are easier to remove than others. We can talk through the process of their removal either at our practice under local anaesthetic or whether you may need the next level of care with a referral to a specialist.
It is unfortunate that sometimes teeth need to be removed/extracted. Sometimes this is for orthodontic reasons to make space or on other occasions teeth can no longer be saved or the patient may choose not to save it. We can guide you through the decision process. Most teeth can be removed under local anaesthetic within the practice. Sometimes a tooth may be deemed more difficult or complicated and require a referral to a specialist oral surgeon which we can organise for you.
Crowns are sometimes the best option when the tooth has been significantly weakened due to decay, having had large fillings or root canal treatment. In these cases they need more protection than a standard filling can provide. A crown will help to protect the tooth structure that remains and give you confidence in your bite. We have our crowns made by a technician and they require two visits. There are different types of crowns and the dentist will discuss the best option for your specific tooth and bite. Bridges are another option we use to replace missing teeth. They are fixed in place and chosen to achieve good aesthetics and help maintain function after the loss of a tooth. These are bonded to and involve the teeth either side of the gap. Again we use a dental technician to make these and hence involves a minimum of 2 visits. Veneers are often a good option to minimise tooth reduction to create better aesthetics for anterior/front teeth. They can be done directly onto the tooth with composite resin or made by a technician from porcelain.
We make different kinds of dentures which are removable appliances that aid to fill gaps within the patient's dentition. They are helpful in filling single but more efficiently multiple gaps created by missing teeth. Upon occasions we may refer you to see an appropriate Clinical Dental Technician to help you directly with your denture needs.
Dental implants are now becoming a more frequently chosen option to fill a gap in your dentition. They are essentially titanium screws that are placed and integrated into your jaw by a specialist. They are then fitted with a porcelain crown and stand alone ie. don't depend upon your other teeth to support them. We are doing more and more implant work and enjoy working with a specialist team to achieve the best result in order to replace your lost/missing teeth.
Sometimes our teeth can discolour either with age, due to diet or due to trauma to our mouth. We have different systems to offer in order to try and achieve an even coloured and brighter whiter smile. This may be bleaching a single tooth from within or providing you with custom made guards to do some bleaching at home. Your dentist will provide you with the best options for your tooth shade concerns.
In some cases where the decay has become so deep that it affects the nerve within the tooth, the tooth may still be able to be saved with a root canal treatment. Root canals may also be required on some occasions where the nerve dies within the tooth due to trauma to the tooth, due to having heavy/deep restorations or severe gum problems. Root canal treatment is where the tooth remains in place, avoiding extraction and the canal system within the root of the tooth is cleaned out and sealed. This is a multi visit treatment and your dentist will explain the procedure with you if this is the right treatment for your tooth. Following a root canal treatment your tooth will often need protecting due to its fragility with a crown.
